On October 22, 2024, Huawei launched HarmonyOS NEXT, its new native mobile operating system with Huawei’s app ecosystem, new user interface, and better performance.

In 2019, the Chinese tech maker introduced HarmonyOS in the wake of US sanctions. The US banned the company from accessing Android and Google Play Services (GMS). This led to a sharp decline in Huawei’s smartphone sales in the global market.

In 2020, HarmonyOS entered mobile devices and adapted for millions of devices. Initially, the software’s interface and features were identical to its Android-based counterpart “EMUI”.

Some software industry observers criticized Huawei’s new mobile operating system and called it a “forked Android”. These allegations have a simple connection with Android Open Source library integration to HarmonyOS code.

The company separated both software ecosystems and kept HarmonyOS exclusive to the Chinese market where it still sells a majority of devices.

The initial HarmonyOS software has Android app support due to the lack of an app ecosystem. The company wanted to use its existing developer base for EMUI devices. In the past three years, it has turned this base into HarmonyOS and added millions of new developers.

This continued until last year when Huawei announced the development of a native HarmonyOS version. The company also confirmed that this new software will run only HarmonyOS apps.

This news has made many headlines across the internet due to the potential it could bring in the competition against iOS and Android, two of the most dominating mobile OS.

That brings us back to HarmonyOS, the company has been working on this OS for the past two years. Throughout this time, it has been cooperating with Chinese software industry leaders to create a whole environment of HarmonyOS NEXT apps.

Some of the notable names are Tencent, ByteDance, JD.com and more. As of October 2024, these firms have completed their HarmonyOS NEXT app and could launch their release version any time soon.

Aside from the ecosystem, this new HarmonyOS NEXT launched with performance upgrades compared to its predecessor. It has fluid animations and better-optimized visuals.

Furthermore, the software is labeled as HarmonyOS NEXT 5, which indicates that the software is moving further from HarmonyOS 4.

Huawei Mate 70 series is coming and today, a tipster leaked its back cover revealing the camera design and the position of the side fingerprint sensor. The input also hints that the flagship lineup is seemingly ready to go official next month.

Weibo tipster @BeijingDigitalMaster shared some images of the Huawei Mate 70 back cover. The protective cover appeared in a Cyan pastel shade and has the “Mate 70” moniker on its plastic wrapper. The rear side reflects a matte finish.

Speaking of the details, the Mate 70 phone case reveals a big, uplifted, and circular camera bump. The outer rim of this module is wider than the previous-gen models. However, the thickness reduces the size of the frame, compared to Mate 60.

The external rim shines in silver color. Meanwhile, the inner circle of the camera bump resembles the Mate 60 series (above image). Although a few netizens said that the Mate 70 series might feature the Mate 50-like camera sensor arrangement.

Another notable segment is the right-angle frame. The back cover shows a more flat frame than the predecessors. If not many, consumers will notice some effective changes in the new Mate series’ appearance.

Mate 70 back cover leak further confirms a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The power button below the volume rockers reveals an open design which implies that at least the standard variant will possess the side fingerprint unlocking solution.

Whereas, the high-end models like the Pro+ and Ultimate Design variants could continue to feature the optical fingerprint scanner.

The back cover also shows rounded corners and slim edges all around the phone. Other details are unknown but the current leak implies that the Mate 70 series is nearing its launch.

The latest leak also hints that the Mate 70 series will offer both a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a 3D face recognition system. Regarding the camera sensors, the company has been testing new OmniVision lenses for the flagship lineup.

Perhaps this time, the company won’t make major changes to the device’s outlook but focus on the internal parameters. And let’s not forget that the two major additions to the Mate 70 series would be a new Kirin 5G chip and the HarmonyOS NEXT.

South Korea is planning strict measures to block its chipset secrets as well as business leaks worldwide. The government could soon impose “heavier than before” penalties on those who leak regional regulations and chip-related secrets to others.

According to Reuters, the finance minister of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok said that the country is readying strict measures and rules to block chipset and technology leaks in the global market. It is preparing a big-data system as a major safety.

The new “big data” system will lead to useful and stricter rules with tougher punishments for culprits. The penalties under this system are unknown but it will eventually ensure full security of the business secrets and chip tech in the country.

“We will prevent illegal leaks of advanced technologies to raise the global competitiveness of our companies and strengthen technology leadership.” – said Choi.

South Korean government is taking such strict measures following the previous leak cases in the country. Inputs reveal that over 97 attempts have been made in the past five years to leak business secrets and chipset details to other countries.

As noted by the National Intelligence Service, 40 of these leaks were regarding chip manufacturing and its relevant parts. The good news is that these leaks didn’t achieve success. Or else, it would have led to a loss of $16.85 billion to the country.

In September, a South Korean official blamed for stealing chipmaking details from Samsung.  Thus, a few strict measures on this matter are quite necessary.

Over the years, South Korea established around 12 national strategic tech firms that can support the country financially. These include rechargeable batteries, aerospace and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and more.

These industries also aim to protect and respond actively to global competition and help resolve supply chain problems. It would be worth seeing what new penalties South Korea will take on the chipset and tech leak matter.

Huawei Mate 60 Pro is a ‘hot-in-demand’ device in the Chinese smartphone market and its sales record is touching heights. A new input reveals that the Mate 60 Pro shipment has been more than the entire series sales in the consumer market.

A smart chip consultant recently shared the sales aspect of Huawei Mate 60 series models. The company launched the flagship lineup last year. And it’s still buzzing in the market with the same excitement – thanks to its top-of-the-line capabilities.

The input reveals that the high-end Mate 60 models: Pro+ and RS Ultimate Design didn’t perform well in the sales. These have the lowest sales figures among all four variants. A major reason is their high price which didn’t attract many customers.

For reference, the starting price of the Mate 60 Pro+ is 8999 yuan whereas, the Ultimate Design model ranges from 11999 yuan. Meanwhile, there isn’t much difference in the features or tech capabilities, except for the design and materials.

Also, the Mate 60 Pro+ and RS Ultimate Design constantly struggled with stock supply. Despite an ultra-premium price, when users tried to purchase the models, the company extended the shipment wait on both online as well as offline stores.

Huawei Mate 60 Pro sales

On the other hand, Mate 60 Pro has been at an effective price. Also, its 5G capabilities and satellite calling tempted customers’ towards it. The tipster reveals that after 13-14 months of launch, Huawei Mate 60 Pro sales are higher than the combined sales of all three models (Standard, Pro+, and RS Ultimate Design).

Mate 60 Pro sales record is 4.1 times higher than the combined sales of the other three variants. That says, Mate 60 Pro is still highly competitive and in-demand model in the Chinese smartphone market. But the company has not confirmed this news.

A previous input revealed that the device has surpassed 10 million units in sales. Huawei has now lowered the price of the Mate 60 series on the Vmall ahead of the Mate 70 series launch. Users have the chance to grab the model at an amazing discount.

Honor X60 is ready to enter the launch lane and ahead of that, the Pro variant is appearing in leaks with speculations on a lightweight design. The device is suspected to adopt a beautiful and thin back panel with an impressive camera module.

Weibo tipster @FixedFocus says that the Honor X60 Pro will feature a good, thin back panel design. It would be different from the predecessor which has a split on the camera bump. This time, the OEM could make the back cover look more aesthetic.

The tipster further says that the front side grip of the X60 Pro feels like the Honor 200 Pro. Perhaps, it might have thin edges, narrowest bezels, and slightly rounded corners. Although the front design may vary or could be similar to the X50 Pro.

Other key specs and internal configurations are unknown. However, the leak suggests that the Honor X60 Pro will bring a thin and lightweight design over its predecessors. The overall flatness of the phone is expected to be far better than any other model.

Honor X60 will go official this month. The device is also said to feature a distinct appearance over the previous-gen handset. But again, the exact look of the device is a mystery. Perhaps, the company will unveil the details a week before the launch.

The upcoming Honor X60 models are said to feature flagship-level specs and capabilities. These will likely use an efficient Snapdragon mid-range chipset and might cost similar to predecessors. However, an official confirmation awaits on this matter.

Honor X60 series may sport a dual-curved OLED screen with 1.5K resolution and high-end display solutions for a brighter and more vibrant viewing experience. It could also bring a huge rear camera system with improved imaging features to enhance the photography experience.

Samsung will reveal One UI 7 software at its annual developer conference with new capabilities but can it compete against HarmonyOS NEXT and iOS 18?

Samsung is the largest Android partner and sells most devices in each quarter. Despite this dominance, the South Korean tech firm is a latecomer in the software experience.

It made some changes in One UI 6 including a new quick settings panel and new controls. These are much appreciated by One UI users but that doesn’t reflect any solution for a core issue.

The software feels more rigid and animations are still not fluid enough to fully utilize the device’s hardware performance. The user interface has improved over time yet Samsung could do even better.

One UI 7 will be based on Android 15, the latest Android software version. There are new camera optimizations, better navigation capabilities, satellite connectivity support, and more.

Aside from these, what do the competitors have to offer?

iOS 18

Apple has recently refreshed its iOS operating system for iPhones. It has drastically changed the software UI, improved personalization, and optimized animation effects throughout the system.

For example, the two new popular sections in this new OS are the control center and home screen. Apple is now allowing users to customize the control center and add custom controls.

This feature is already available in Android devices but Apple took it to the next level with new customizations. You can resize control buttons based on the space and group them. iOS 18 users can also manage different control screens based on their categories for an improved experience.

Another addition is the app icons with colors based on a tint selection right on the screen without even going to the settings. These capabilities are far more accessible compared to Samsung or Android.

Coming to the performance, the app and animations open slightly faster and animations are optimized to feel surrealistic, except for the 60Hz devices.

HarmonyOS NEXT

Coming to the new player, HarmonyOS NEXT is a new operating system based on HarmonyOS. Huawei has been polishing this Android-influenced OS for the past four years.

The software has now achieved a native app ecosystem in the Chinese market. It is redesigned for maximum fluidity and physics-based controls.

In comparison to One UI 6, HarmonyOS (not HarmonyOS NEXT) performs far better in smoothness and app interactions. HarmonyOS NEXT has even better interactions with the native experience.

One UI 7 will be better?

Even though Samsung may not achieve superiority over these two software, it should at least come to the same level as its competitors because it will eventually benefit its customers. We’ll see what the company unveils at SDC event.

Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design could feature major design and display upgrades over its predecessor. We have already discussed the respective device’s appearance to some extent in the previous article. Now let’s learn new details about the screen.

FixedFocus notes that the Huawei Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design will sport a more innovative display solution. While the standard/Pro variants may use a simple OLED, the company could adopt a major display upgrade for Ultimate Design model.

Looking into the latest display solutions, a few netizens commented that the company might use the dual-layer OLED technology for the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design.

The company has recently launched its first double-layer OLED product – MatePad Pro 12.2 in native and overseas markets. And there are chances that it may use the same display solution for the upcoming premium Ultimate Design model.

Dual-layer OLED is an advanced display solution that enhances the visual effects to a greater extent. It contains anti-reflection properties and lessens the environmental light interference by 99%. Users can easily see the content even in direct sunlight.

Further capabilities include brighter and clearer picture quality. It boosts the color accuracy on the screen which makes the viewing experience more realistic.

The next benefit is the durability. Dual-layer OLED can reduce power consumption by 30%. It is also a scratch-resistant solution and protects the screen from external risk factors. These factors make it the best display solution.

Perhaps Huawei could adopt a dual-layer OLED screen for the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design handset. Although an official confirmation on this matter still awaits.

Mate 60 RS Ultimate Design Display

Huawei has imposed a simple 6.82-inch OLED panel on the Mate 60 RS Ultimate Design. The display features an FHD+ resolution (2720 x 1260 pixels), 1.07 billion colors, a P3 wide color gamut, 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and a 300Hz touch rate.

This screen is further protected by the second-gen Kunlun glass that has super scratch-resistant properties. It shields the device from accidental drops.
