Huawei is seeing South Africa as a big scope for the expansion of its Cloud business. The company believes that it can increase its revenue by offering more advanced cloud solutions in the country and becoming a major tech supplier for enterprises.

According to Reuters, Huawei is aiming to increase its consumer base in South Africa for Cloud business. The OEM has been serving in the country since 2019.

Over time, it has attracted big operators and became the first global vendor to build a hyperscale cloud data center. 1000+ customers from financial services, education, telecoms, and government joined the Huawei Cloud ecosystem in South Africa.

In a recent Cloud Summit in Johannesburg, the President of Huawei Cloud Global Marketing and Sales Service – Jacqueline Shi said that the firm has well grown in the past five years. Now it aims to expand its market share to a greater extent.

Jacqueline Shi mentioned:

“With this kind of strong support from different customers, our cloud business in South Africa has increased more than 16 times over the past five years.”

Apart from the previous success, Shi added that the total revenue is still not so big. Thus, the company’s goal is to introduce more new and useful cloud solutions in the country, that can result in a larger share of the country’s cloud market.

Huawei’s cloud services are steadily becoming a major opponent for firms like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and others in South Africa. With constant efforts, the company will increase its shares in the cloud market in the upcoming years.

Analysts reveal that South Africa will progress at a compound rate of 26% till 2028 to $6 billion. During this period, Huawei could attain more success for its Cloud business in the country.

TSMC has halted its chip shipments to a suspected Huawei Supplier. After finding one of its advanced SoCs in Huawei’s Ascend 910B, the company took this step. It aims to stop the Chinese OEM from progressing in high-end AI chipmaking.

According to Bloomberg, TSMC has stopped the chip supply for a specific client. The chipmaker suspected the respective customer to be a Huawei firm’s well-wisher, helping it develop proficient semiconductors for its products.

Inputs reveal that the Taiwanese chipmaker played this move after finding some of its major SoC parts in Ascend 910B. TSMC has been under the U.S. investigation for some weeks and its components in Huawei’s processor increased the pressure on it.

Following the new findings, some U.S. lawmakers demanded immediate answers on the TSMC chip in Huawei devices. A representative from the U.S. says:

“Reports that cutting-edge TSMC-manufactured chips have contributed to Huawei’s AI development represent a catastrophic failure of U.S. export control policy. Congress needs immediate answers from both Commerce and TSMC about the scope and volume of this disaster.”

Following these tensions, TSMC halted the chip shipments to a suspected Huawei supplier in mid-October. The firm is investigating this matter more thoroughly.

However, it’s unconfirmed if the client belongs to the Huawei supplier list or is just a normal customer. Things might be revealed as the investigation proceeds ahead.

On Tuesday, Huawei mentioned that it hasn’t built any chips via TSMC after the U.S. sanctions since 2020. That makes the matter more confusing on how the TSMC chips made their way to Chinese processors.

Earlier teardowns of Huawei products implied that the company had some stocked components for three years. Perhaps it might be using these parts in its chips.

The U.S. will continue to investigate this matter till it gets satisfactory answers to its questions. In the upcoming days, we may hear some more interesting revelations on this topic.

On October 22, 2024, Huawei launched HarmonyOS NEXT, its new native mobile operating system with Huawei’s app ecosystem, new user interface, and better performance.

In 2019, the Chinese tech maker introduced HarmonyOS in the wake of US sanctions. The US banned the company from accessing Android and Google Play Services (GMS). This led to a sharp decline in Huawei’s smartphone sales in the global market.

In 2020, HarmonyOS entered mobile devices and adapted for millions of devices. Initially, the software’s interface and features were identical to its Android-based counterpart “EMUI”.

Some software industry observers criticized Huawei’s new mobile operating system and called it a “forked Android”. These allegations have a simple connection with Android Open Source library integration to HarmonyOS code.

The company separated both software ecosystems and kept HarmonyOS exclusive to the Chinese market where it still sells a majority of devices.

The initial HarmonyOS software has Android app support due to the lack of an app ecosystem. The company wanted to use its existing developer base for EMUI devices. In the past three years, it has turned this base into HarmonyOS and added millions of new developers.

This continued until last year when Huawei announced the development of a native HarmonyOS version. The company also confirmed that this new software will run only HarmonyOS apps.

This news has made many headlines across the internet due to the potential it could bring in the competition against iOS and Android, two of the most dominating mobile OS.

That brings us back to HarmonyOS, the company has been working on this OS for the past two years. Throughout this time, it has been cooperating with Chinese software industry leaders to create a whole environment of HarmonyOS NEXT apps.

Some of the notable names are Tencent, ByteDance, JD.com and more. As of October 2024, these firms have completed their HarmonyOS NEXT app and could launch their release version any time soon.

Aside from the ecosystem, this new HarmonyOS NEXT launched with performance upgrades compared to its predecessor. It has fluid animations and better-optimized visuals.

Furthermore, the software is labeled as HarmonyOS NEXT 5, which indicates that the software is moving further from HarmonyOS 4.

Huawei has released HarmonyOS NEXT.0.0.72 software update for public beta smartphones with new features.

Huawei has been testing public beta with unlimited user slots since October 8 and registered recently released flagship devices for early beta recruitment. That includes the Huawei Mate 60 series, Pura 70 series, Mate X5, and more.

This operating system for smartphones brings numerous new changes and optimizations. The control center has optimized the buttons and provides fast interactions on every switch. The visibility of the control center is also improved compared to HarmonyOS.

The new HarmonyOS NEXT.0.0.72 version has a downloadable package size of 1.1GB. It has added a new one-tap lock screen service button. This will allow you to lock the smartphone with one click after adding it to the home screen.

You need to press the phone’s side button or wait for the screen time out to lock the device. However, if the feature works exactly according to its name, it would be a useful addition for HarmonyOS NEXT users.

This upgrade has a new slider bar with a shape progress bar to show the intensity of the brightness or system sound settings. The icon changes dynamics based on the volume or brightness level.

Huawei said the new change will make the control panel more intuitive and visible to the eyes. Additionally, the update will optimize some UI settings for display to improve the viewing experience.

Last but not least, the company has enabled a drag and reposition feature for the lock screen. This will allow you to reposition the clock on the lock screen and place it anywhere.

South Korea is planning strict measures to block its chipset secrets as well as business leaks worldwide. The government could soon impose “heavier than before” penalties on those who leak regional regulations and chip-related secrets to others.

According to Reuters, the finance minister of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok said that the country is readying strict measures and rules to block chipset and technology leaks in the global market. It is preparing a big-data system as a major safety.

The new “big data” system will lead to useful and stricter rules with tougher punishments for culprits. The penalties under this system are unknown but it will eventually ensure full security of the business secrets and chip tech in the country.

“We will prevent illegal leaks of advanced technologies to raise the global competitiveness of our companies and strengthen technology leadership.” – said Choi.

South Korean government is taking such strict measures following the previous leak cases in the country. Inputs reveal that over 97 attempts have been made in the past five years to leak business secrets and chipset details to other countries.

As noted by the National Intelligence Service, 40 of these leaks were regarding chip manufacturing and its relevant parts. The good news is that these leaks didn’t achieve success. Or else, it would have led to a loss of $16.85 billion to the country.

In September, a South Korean official blamed for stealing chipmaking details from Samsung.  Thus, a few strict measures on this matter are quite necessary.

Over the years, South Korea established around 12 national strategic tech firms that can support the country financially. These include rechargeable batteries, aerospace and artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and more.

These industries also aim to protect and respond actively to global competition and help resolve supply chain problems. It would be worth seeing what new penalties South Korea will take on the chipset and tech leak matter.

Huawei is rolling out a new HarmonyOS NEXT public beta update and it added new exFAT file support among other new improvements. The company has released HMOS NEXT version 0.0.71 (SP1) with 456 megabytes of download size.

exFAT

This HarmonyOS NEXT update has added support for exFAT file system format. This will enable the operating system to detect additional external storage devices.

Extensible File Allocation Table (exFAT) is a file system that is an upgraded version of FAT32. It enables the system to efficiently process large files and storage devices.

It was first introduced in 2006 by Microsoft to replace FAT32 on devices with flash memory such as USB and SD cards. FAT32 has a 4GB size limit but exFAT could handle much larger files.

Furthermore, exFAT is supported by various operating systems including Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. This allows the user to seamlessly share files between different devices.

Charging and other improvements

The new update boosts turbocharging mode to improve overall user experience. The firmware also improves the user interface and optimizes system stability for better performance.

There’s a fix for Celia keyboard which resolves some issues with character position. On the other hand, devices with facial recognition have been facing issues with random unlock errors, which is addressed with this software.

The contact app is getting a new fix for issues in deleting and merging similar contacts. Eventually, the update has optimized the system for a better user experience in some situations.

Beta

Released on October 8, the public beta campaign has gathered more than a million users. The current activity is limited to flagship devices and will expand to other models as the activity progresses.

The program has unlimited test slots and any users with eligible devices can opt for public beta, folowed by OTA release.
