Ren Zhengfei – the Founder of Huawei Technologies recently said that the company had been left with no choice but to develop its tech after the US ban. The executive shared his thoughts on how US sanctions affected the company in the past few years.

Zhengfei attended the ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Content) coding competition for university students yesterday. He talked with students about the company, technology, future goals, and various other relevant topics.

During an interrogation with students, Ren said the U.S. has openness and inclusivity in its tech community that benefits it in every field including the chipmaking sector.

Ren believes that Huawei can learn from the receptive culture of the US as it makes the country advance in science and technology. The founder adds the US ban led Huawei to build its tech as it cannot access advanced tools from foreign markets.

“The US has set an example for all countries and companies worldwide on being open. If a country is closed off, it will fall behind.” – says Ren Zhengfei.

US vs Huawei

US sanctions hit Huawei in 2019 due to security concerns. As of now, the foreign authorities tightened the trade controls to continue blocking Huawei from accessing advanced chipmaking tools or equipment.

However, these restrictions have also shown some positive results. Due to the US ban, Huawei started marching on the self-sufficiency path and making the country self-dependent rather than relying on foreign goods, AI chips, and software.

“American technologies and tools are very good… [but] Huawei cannot use them; we had no choice but to create our tools. Open innovation and utilizing the advanced achievements of others is the true way forward for an enterprise.” – Ren Zhengfei.

The executive also believes that AI is becoming unstoppable. It is creating turning points for many firms. If Huawei uses AI in the best ways, it could achieve more success in the time ahead. However, the company needs to put more effort into being at the top in the AI race.

Huawei is searching for new talents that can help it overcome its shortcomings and flaws, says a senior executive of the company. The aim is to contribute highly to technological breakthroughs with the help of new talented employees.

Ren Zhengfei – the founder and CEO of Huawei recently visited Sichuan University. During the discussions and his keynote, the executive stated that Huawei seeks new talents to overcome challenges and technological shortcomings in the company.

He adds that these new talents will also play a vital role in dealing with critical issues and problems, faced by the industry. Thus together, both newly talented employees and the company will achieve great milestones in the future.

It is not the first time that Huawei is hunting for new talents. After being banned by the U.S. authorities, Huawei initiated the “Genius Youth” programme several times to recruit better, smarter, and more talented employees for the firm.

“Huawei will save talent, not US dollars”, Ren said last year in his speech and emphasized the importance of talented people in the industry. Most of these are being picked from top research honors winners with impactful and tangible results.

Huawei Executive talents shortcomings

Ren Zhengfei strongly believes that China needs ‘pure’ research that is not driven by applied science. The term pure reflects the focus on advancing theory rather than waiting for results regarding a particular goal or product.

Huawei continued the quest for new talents since 2020 and visited the top and oldest public universities in this journey for talents with high values.

Some other universities in this list count:

  1. Shanghai’s prestigious Fudan University
  2. Shanghai Jiao Tong University
  3. Beijing Tsinghua University
  4. Peking University
  5. Chinese Academy of Sciences

Huawei’s Focus:

The Chinese phone maker currently focuses on the semiconductor part. When the world is trying to lead with 2nm or 3nm processes, Huawei is still relying on the 7nm chip. The company says that this lag is due to US sanctions, which aren’t faced by others.

Another reason is the lack of advanced chip equipment that can help the company in making better processors. Yet Huawei is making efforts to overcome these challenges in the time ahead. Read More…

Despite several obstacles, Huawei’s AI chips are better than its rivals like Nvidia with 20% more efficiency. A few tests proved that Nvidia needs more effort to chase its customers in the Chinese market. Yet to win the semiconductor race, Huawei needs to build advanced chips.

In a recent interview in China, Huawei Founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei talked about Huawei’s product quality and market competitiveness.

He said that Huawei will not sell products that are advanced enough. If the company can’t sell advanced products, it won’t obtain high prices to support its staff.

Ren also explained this statement, that Huawei is facing increasingly severe external difficulties. However, he also said that his company will become more prosperous as time goes by.

Ren Zhengfei said that the Chinese industry needs a better standard system than the US. He mentioned that the American standard system was designed in the 1970s, which is over 50 years ago. These are optimized and changed with each generation.

Ren Zhengfei also shared their view on Euler and HarmonyOS, saying that both of these software codes are donated to open-source foundations. However, the company still insists on investing thousands of people and billions of yuan in this section each year.

Currently, there are over 30 operating systems in China that are based on open-source HarmonyOS. These OS are built for various platforms including smartphones, tablets, smart home devices, and more

Coming to the ERP, he said that MetaERP is gathering attention from the industry and it could easily integrate with cloud technologies.

Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei urged the company staff to achieve high-skill talent and lead in specific areas of business. Zhengfei’s latest remarks were revealed in his latest speech published on Huawei’s website on Monday.

The founder emphasized in his speech “Huawei will save talent, not US dollars”, which he delivered on July 28th.

“We will try hard to lead in some business aspects globally, not all aspects. For our products, the boundary can be relatively narrow, but our research boundary can be wider,” said Huawei founder.

However, his focus also turned toward talent pool development and advised existing talent to work with passion.

“I think the material reward is not that important,” he said. “The first thing is that [the worker] finds a position he has passion for … If he can work on something he is interested in, he will have no regrets.”

Huawei shared the transcript after the release of the Huawei Mate 60 series on August 29. This release marks a successful return of 5G in Huawei devices nearly after 3 years of US sanctions.

Talent recruitment has long been important for Huawei. Ren initiated a program known as “Top Minds” in 2019, just months after the company was blacklisted by the US government. That recruitment drive, later dubbed the “Genius Youth” program, gave priority to candidates whose research had produced “tangible and impactful” results and winners of top research honors, according to an advertisement posted by Huawei on Weibo at the time.

Huawei recently achieved a breakthrough in software technology by launching its own ERP management system, MetaERP. Reacting to this achievement, Ren Zhengfei, Founder of Huawei hopes that the company will become more strong one day in the software field.

Mr. Ren is a core person behind Huawei’s survival in harsh conditions. He continues to push forward the tech firm and give it a new direction to maintain business growth in the industry.

His latest statement came during the MetaERP Commendation Meeting, where he met with the people behind the development of this software. He also thanked them for their active contribution to bring MetaERP into action.

“Success is inseparable from you, and future development is even more related to you,” said Mr. Ren.

Hope for the future:

The Huawei Founder said his company is still lagging behind in the software competition but also lauds the hope that it will become strong one day. “Because it is possible” He stressed.

This is quite true, the latest development and the launch of MetaERP show that the company is actively working on the latest breakthrough to resolve in-hand issues and problems.

He also urged the Chinese software companies to come forward and strengthen ties with each other. Also, cooperate to build new software industry and lead them to the future.

Under his leadership, Huawei began deep strategic partnerships with various Chinese and global players in order to survive out of the US restrictions. Initially, it felt impossible but slowly, it is cutting through the difficulties.

So, Huawei may be lagging behind in developing software but the company already has a strong software portfolio in China. Recently, Huawei took serious steps for removing branding from all third-party partner products including cars, smartphones, and other electronic devices. This confirmed that this move will save the company from gaining false publicity and prevent brand misuse.

After the 2022 annual results, Huawei issued an announcement on the smart car business. It was signed by Huawei’s founder and chairman Ren Zhengfei. He strictly calls on all of Huawei officials to abide by the new announcement and move in the same direction.

Ren said “Huawei or HUAWEI” words cannot be used by any vehicle publicity or design. He forced Huawei Wenji or Huawei AITO to false under the same circumstances and these will also be denounced.

After that, AITO removed all of the Huawei logo and Huawei-related references for car promotion. Also, AITO’s marketing team is banned from adding Huawei before their car names.

Aside from Ren Zhengfei, the rotating chairman of Huawei, Xu Zhijun also responded to the fact that AITO Wenjie became “HUAWEI Wenjie”. Some individuals, companies, and partners are abusing the Huawei brand and Huawei will take appropriate actions against them, concluded Xu.

A few days ago, during an EV conference in China, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group said that there are different opinions among top leaders but we all are thinking in the same direction.

Other than misuse, Yu Chengdong said If every car company forms an independent brand, it will be very difficult for us to market them.

Third-party:

A Weibo blogger revealed that Huawei has notified all of the stores to remove the promotional material on smartphones and other third-party stores under Huawei’s smart selection category.

These phone makers with Huawei design rights will strictly follow the new rules of not using Huawei in promotional or sales slogans.

Huawei removing branding

Huawei Smart Selection is a smart home ecosystem brand launched by Huawei. It is an important part of Huawei’s all-scenario smart life strategy. Also, it’s similar to Mijia in the Xiaomi ecosystem, providing a platform, but the products are usually branded by other partners.

For example, Hi nova is a new smart devices brand created by China Post Communication Equipment. The overall specs of the Hi Nova 10 Pro are similar to Huawei Nova 10 Pro. Because it is a licensed device and all rights of the phone are reserved by China Post. Meanwhile, Huawei is marketing them with an online sales website, Vmall.

Right Decision?

Yes, removing branding from third-party devices and products is a good decision for Huawei. It will improve brand safety and won’t let any company misuse its integrity.

The father of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei made a big revelation about Huawei’s replacement of over 13000 components that has been banned by the U.S. government. The Huawei boss made these remarks in a meeting with Chinese students and experts that helped the company to solve new technical issues after the U.S. ban.

Ren said that Huawei has completed the replacement and development of over 13000 components for its devices after U.S. restrictions. The company also did the same for 4000+ circuit boards over the last three years.

Ren said that Huawei continuously invested money in research of new technologies since 2019. According to information, Huawei spent around 23.8 billion USD in research and development (R&D) and he expects that the company will further increase this amount with growth in the future.

He revealed that Huawei has built its own management system software MetaERP with its own operating system, database, and compiler. Interstingly, MetaERP successfully passed the test of application in Huawei’s various divisions around the globe and the annual settlement test of Huawei’s ledger.

U.S. sanctions:

In 2019, the U.S. commerce department applied export restrictions on Huawei from purchasing new components. These are used to build network gear and smartphones. It later caused a big loss in business for Huawei in all divisions, especially in the consumer sector.

However, Huawei kept on building new devices with what it could gather and kept doing business with global partners in network technologies.

The firm is researching new carrier tech such as 5.5G, which is way ahead of other equipment makers. Also, Huawei is resurging in market share in the smartphone world with the launch of new phones.

However, a major issue that is causing problems for the tech maker still lies in the semiconductor industry. It needs a big breakthrough for both Huawei and the Chinese tech industry.

Despite challenges, Huawei organized a successful MWC 2023 and unveiled various new technologies that awed the people. Still, there’s a lot more to come from the company in the near future.
