Ren Zhengfei – the Founder of Huawei Technologies recently said that the company had been left with no choice but to develop its tech after the US ban. The executive shared his thoughts on how US sanctions affected the company in the past few years.

Zhengfei attended the ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Content) coding competition for university students yesterday. He talked with students about the company, technology, future goals, and various other relevant topics.

During an interrogation with students, Ren said the U.S. has openness and inclusivity in its tech community that benefits it in every field including the chipmaking sector.

Ren believes that Huawei can learn from the receptive culture of the US as it makes the country advance in science and technology. The founder adds the US ban led Huawei to build its tech as it cannot access advanced tools from foreign markets.

“The US has set an example for all countries and companies worldwide on being open. If a country is closed off, it will fall behind.” – says Ren Zhengfei.

US vs Huawei

US sanctions hit Huawei in 2019 due to security concerns. As of now, the foreign authorities tightened the trade controls to continue blocking Huawei from accessing advanced chipmaking tools or equipment.

However, these restrictions have also shown some positive results. Due to the US ban, Huawei started marching on the self-sufficiency path and making the country self-dependent rather than relying on foreign goods, AI chips, and software.

“American technologies and tools are very good… [but] Huawei cannot use them; we had no choice but to create our tools. Open innovation and utilizing the advanced achievements of others is the true way forward for an enterprise.” – Ren Zhengfei.

The executive also believes that AI is becoming unstoppable. It is creating turning points for many firms. If Huawei uses AI in the best ways, it could achieve more success in the time ahead. However, the company needs to put more effort into being at the top in the AI race.

In recent days, Huawei has gone through several obstacles. Mentioning the major one, the US sanctions have almost hampered the company’s widespread business. Thus, in order to remake itself, Huawei founder – Ren Zhengfei has started motivating the employees for future innovations.

Although, the Chinese manufacturer has a strong worldwide staff (approx 195,000) that could easily regain the profit of their business. Yet, the company finds it difficult to recollect all the revenue sources and meet the same benefits, once it had.

Hence, the Huawei founder called off his employees and experts to speak deliberately about how to give a better direction to the company’s progress. Accordingly, more than 6000 scientists and consultants have sat around the table discussing ideas for new creations.

Apart from the employees, Ren himself kept his words in front of the staff members describing the ongoing efforts and other transformations of the Chinese firm:

“The transformation from ideas to projects and products will depend on the review by decision-makers. And I hope everything the company does is within boundaries and creates short or long-term value. Your innovation should have business value rather than just being an idea.”

Previous reports show that Huawei faced a decline of one-third in its last year’s sales. Though somehow, the company managed to make profits by 76%. Yet, it was less than that of the sale of 2020. Moreover, the 76 percent profit has a huge contribution to the Honor smartphone business.

Alongside, the smartphone business has come under the sanctions toils due to which the company’s revenue dropped half from the last year, that is 243.4 billion yuan. In order to accelerate the smartphone business this year, Huawei added a new model to its Nova lineup – Huawei Nova 10 series. However, the lack of 5G capability could serve as a challenge for the company’s yield in some manner.

In an interview with the Financial Times published last month, Huawei founder said Apple is our role model in terms of users data privacy and Huawei will never go against users interests.

Ren was questioned, whether he will stand against the government like Apple? He replied – No. Actually, Apple is not a mobile phone company, but an Internet company, a kind of carrier. Only carriers can control user data. Apple has established a platform on which a full ecosystem has developed, so Apple owns that data.

Another question is whether the company will unlock a phone to share data with the Chinese government, Ren answered – We will never share users data with the government.

“If I had done it even once, the US would have evidence to spread around the world. Then the 170 countries and regions in which we currently operate would stop buying our products, and our company would collapse. After that, who would pay the debts we owe?” he said

“Our employees are all very competent, so they would resign and start their own companies, leaving me alone to pay off our debts. I would rather die,” he added.

Ren previously predicted smartphone revenue loss due to Huawei’s blacklisted in the US and barred the company from buying component and software services from the US firms. Last week, president Donald Trump announced ease in trade restriction for Huawei but effective action is yet to be taken by the commerce department.

On July 4th, Frech ‘Le Point’ magazine posted an interview of Huawei Founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei, who talked about the company’s business and issues with the U.S., as well as the company’s self-developed Operating System.

Hongmeng/ARK OS: Here’s everything you need to know about Huawei’s Operating System

Ren said the Huawei’s operating system is designed to work with a variety of devices including printed circuit boards, network switches, routers, smartphones and data centers.

Back in May, Huawei has filed trademark applications for “Hongmeng” around the global intellectual property organizations and most of them indicates the same things that the OS will be used for a series of different devices including smartphone, tablets, computers, wearables, IoT devices, and more.

“The operating system will have a processing latency of less than 5 milliseconds and the control is precise, which makes this system perfect to be adapted for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Autonomous Driving. For example, We are building this OS to make it possible to interconnect all devices synchronously, this is how we can project ourselves towards a smart society” said Ren.

While being asked about the is the Operating system better and faster than Google’s Android and Apple’s Mac OS? He replied “very likely”.

The most interesting things that he said, is the operating system is already operational in some devices in China. Although he didn’t mention whether he was talking about internal testing or open testing because yesterday we found that the company is conducting some tests on the OS.

After the business restriction imposed by the US on Huawei, Google and Microsoft have to imply the trade rules in which they’ve to stop selling their software services to Huawei. This will lead to the stoppage of Android and Windows to the company.

To prepare for such situation, Huawei was building its own operating system, first mentioned by Huawei CEO, Yu Chengdong, who revealed that the company will use it if the US bars the company from using Android or Windows.

For now, this is a bunch of useful information coming from the company’s founder and we’ll keep looking forward to any new news regarding Hongmeng OS.
