Ren Zhengfei – the Founder of Huawei Technologies recently said that the company had been left with no choice but to develop its tech after the US ban. The executive shared his thoughts on how US sanctions affected the company in the past few years.

Zhengfei attended the ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Content) coding competition for university students yesterday. He talked with students about the company, technology, future goals, and various other relevant topics.

During an interrogation with students, Ren said the U.S. has openness and inclusivity in its tech community that benefits it in every field including the chipmaking sector.

Ren believes that Huawei can learn from the receptive culture of the US as it makes the country advance in science and technology. The founder adds the US ban led Huawei to build its tech as it cannot access advanced tools from foreign markets.

“The US has set an example for all countries and companies worldwide on being open. If a country is closed off, it will fall behind.” – says Ren Zhengfei.

US vs Huawei

US sanctions hit Huawei in 2019 due to security concerns. As of now, the foreign authorities tightened the trade controls to continue blocking Huawei from accessing advanced chipmaking tools or equipment.

However, these restrictions have also shown some positive results. Due to the US ban, Huawei started marching on the self-sufficiency path and making the country self-dependent rather than relying on foreign goods, AI chips, and software.

“American technologies and tools are very good… [but] Huawei cannot use them; we had no choice but to create our tools. Open innovation and utilizing the advanced achievements of others is the true way forward for an enterprise.” – Ren Zhengfei.

The executive also believes that AI is becoming unstoppable. It is creating turning points for many firms. If Huawei uses AI in the best ways, it could achieve more success in the time ahead. However, the company needs to put more effort into being at the top in the AI race.

Huawei has developed the largest R&D Center in Shanghai worth $1.4 billion. The company constructed the new base amid a growing chip war between U.S. and China. It consists of advanced services and facilities for operators that are worth looking at.

The new Huawei R&D Center in Shanghai is named ‘Lianqui Lake’. It covers 2600 acres which is larger than the Apple Park and Microsoft’s Redmond Campus, combined. It has over 40000 offices which can give room to 35000 employees.

Next interesting segment of this center is over 100 cafes. Huawei’s chief executive and founder Ren Zhengfei expects that the new Research and Development Center could attract foreign scientists and talented individuals to join the company’s ecosystem.

Lianqui Lake R&D Center has around 8 blocks (divided into eight districts) and 104 buildings in total. These buildings comprise labs, offices, and leisure areas which are linked with each other via an internal railway system.

In terms of work, the new R&D Center aims to comprise all kinds of work like smartphones, automobiles, and digital energy research. Huawei has been working on the facility since 2021 and now it’s almost complete and requires final touch-ups.

While developing the Lianqui Lake R&D Center in 2021, Ren Zhengfei said:

“We aim to create an atmosphere suitable for foreign scientists to work and live in. Perks like 100 cafes and better infrastructure will further attract young talent from overseas.”

Huawei aims to strengthen its research and development to the fullest. This will eventually help the company deal with the ongoing chip war and the tough U.S. sanctions. With a large R&D Center that looks after many works together, the company would be able to operate and manage its different departments more easily.

The Chinese tech giant invests more than enough amount to its R&D sector. It believes that a powerful research and development branch will contribute to better as well as more effective making of advanced processors.

Huawei is searching for new talents that can help it overcome its shortcomings and flaws, says a senior executive of the company. The aim is to contribute highly to technological breakthroughs with the help of new talented employees.

Ren Zhengfei – the founder and CEO of Huawei recently visited Sichuan University. During the discussions and his keynote, the executive stated that Huawei seeks new talents to overcome challenges and technological shortcomings in the company.

He adds that these new talents will also play a vital role in dealing with critical issues and problems, faced by the industry. Thus together, both newly talented employees and the company will achieve great milestones in the future.

It is not the first time that Huawei is hunting for new talents. After being banned by the U.S. authorities, Huawei initiated the “Genius Youth” programme several times to recruit better, smarter, and more talented employees for the firm.

“Huawei will save talent, not US dollars”, Ren said last year in his speech and emphasized the importance of talented people in the industry. Most of these are being picked from top research honors winners with impactful and tangible results.

Huawei Executive talents shortcomings

Ren Zhengfei strongly believes that China needs ‘pure’ research that is not driven by applied science. The term pure reflects the focus on advancing theory rather than waiting for results regarding a particular goal or product.

Huawei continued the quest for new talents since 2020 and visited the top and oldest public universities in this journey for talents with high values.

Some other universities in this list count:

  1. Shanghai’s prestigious Fudan University
  2. Shanghai Jiao Tong University
  3. Beijing Tsinghua University
  4. Peking University
  5. Chinese Academy of Sciences

Huawei’s Focus:

The Chinese phone maker currently focuses on the semiconductor part. When the world is trying to lead with 2nm or 3nm processes, Huawei is still relying on the 7nm chip. The company says that this lag is due to US sanctions, which aren’t faced by others.

Another reason is the lack of advanced chip equipment that can help the company in making better processors. Yet Huawei is making efforts to overcome these challenges in the time ahead. Read More…

Despite several obstacles, Huawei’s AI chips are better than its rivals like Nvidia with 20% more efficiency. A few tests proved that Nvidia needs more effort to chase its customers in the Chinese market. Yet to win the semiconductor race, Huawei needs to build advanced chips.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO – Yu Chengdong has been in the top headlines for a few hours and the reason is quite interesting. As per some rumors, Ren Zhengfei restricted Huawei CEO with a fine of 10,000 yuan, for saying “far ahead”.

Zhao Hejuan – the founder of Titanium Media posted that the Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong left no choice to Ren Zhengfei but to impose a ban on him worth 10,000 yuan for every time he uses the word ‘far ahead’ in his statements or any venue.

“Richard Yu does indeed have a true temperament. According to reliable sources, Ren Zhengfei had no choice but to impose a ‘ban’ on Richard Yu within Huawei: every time he mentioned “far ahead”, a fine of 10,000! Hahaha” – wrote Titanium Media.

The respective news ranked first in the list of hot searches on Weibo in no time with 44.872 million readings. To confirm the rumor, a media called “Meta News” contacted the Huawei CEO about reports of being restricted from saying “far ahead”.

In response, Yu Chengdong denied the above news and said that it was just a rumor. His statement removed the mist from the surface and made things clear.

Another news from China Intellectual Property shows that Huawei’s ‘far ahead’ trademark has withdrawn and currently serving under invalid status. However, Yu Chengdong has been using these terms as a common phrase while unveiling new products and it has nothing to do with the ongoing rumors.

What is Far Ahead?

During the 2023 Huawei Pollen Annual Conference in December last year, the CEO described that ‘far ahead’ refers to making progress in the working fields. He further adds that this becomes possible with strong technological investment, R&D innovation as well as constant efforts in the company.

Reasons behind the Luxeed S7 delay:

Huawei CEO explains that Luxeed S7 launch delay is mainly due to the chip shortage and factory relocation which has pushed off the overall mass production. However, things seem to turn back to normal in the next month.

Adding more, Yu says that Huawei doesn’t prefer to make more smart car selections due to a lack of resources that can only build four model rooms. Yet, he believes that the company will successfully release the transformation of smart cars via its solutions and technologies.

“Due to various reasons, our costs are still on the high side. We are wholeheartedly helping Chinese car companies achieve business results in the transformation and upgrading of cars in the era of intelligence, electrification, and connectivity.”

Huawei has just wrapped the Winter product launch conference where it has unveiled several products including the Nova 12 series. Concluding the event, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business – Yu Chengdong said that the company has come so far and survived without dying, even after dealing with multiple sanctions.

Over the past decade, Huawei has reshuffled its smartphone business many times to regain its value in the market. Despite numerous restrictions as well as foreign challenges, the company has managed to lead the way for rapid development.

Let’s go through a flashback to understand this matter in detail.

Beginning of U.S. Ban

Back in 2019, Huawei has been a powerful tech vendor in China. With iconic products and unique camera capabilities, the company’s sales revenue was showing good outcomes. However, the tech giant was suddenly hit by the U.S. ban.

Accordingly, the U.S. authorities believed that Huawei’s products act as a threat to the nation’s security and users’ privacy. Though the Chinese firm didn’t agree to any of the allegations, it was restricted from doing business in foreign regions or selling its software and hardware components.

This ban expanded to the processor segment and curbed many suppliers to help Huawei with Kirin’s development. Eventually, these obstacles led to a shocking decline in the company’s smartphone market share.

At the new Winter Product launch event, Yu Chengdong mentioned ‘Our business reached rock bottom last year. Under such difficult circumstances and sanctions, Huawei still survived without dying and made a good comeback’.

Huawei survived sanctions

Introduction of Mate 60

Well, huge credit for this revival goes to newly launched devices such as the P60 and Mate 60 series. Especially, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro smartphone become the major attention for users as it has the missing Kirin 5G chipset.

Meanwhile, the company continued to add new facilities such as the Pioneer Plan and other services that maintained the attraction point of consumers.

In a recent interview, Huawei Founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the U.S. sanction has been a curse for the company but at the same time, it also appeared as a blessing. Instead of completely depending on U.S. firms, Huawei has learned to be independent and continues to grow.

Up to this point, Huawei has manufactured more than 10000 parts and native components. No doubt, this is just the beginning and the company will constantly take new steps in its growth and development journey.

News regarding Huawei suggests that the company has started preparing for an IPO (initial public offering). Though the tech giant hasn’t officially commented on this matter, the latest input has a lot to reveal about it.

So far, Huawei’s CEO Ren Zhengfei refuses to see the company as a publicly traded sector and rather focuses on developing solutions that can contribute to efficient user experience. However, if it is about China’s welfare, then we may see Huawei preparing for the IPO.

The Chinese tech giant significantly represents both innovation as well as technological independence. A good example of this scenario is the Mate 60 5G handset equipped with SMIC advanced chipset, which hyped Huawei’s growth despite U.S. sanctions.

Although one cannot deny the fact that foreign regulations led to a major decline in the company’s growth rate. Huawei’s profit margin fell to 7% in 2022 with an annual net profit of $5.1 billion. This value would rise by $128 billion in the time ahead.

Huawei preparing IPO

Lenovo’s ex-chief technology officer – Ni Guangnan predicted in 2019 that Huawei would be worth $1.3 trillion in the future. At that time, Apple was swinging at the top of the market with a $1 trillion net profit.

Perhaps, Chinese investors can help Huawei boost its growth in the market share and profit race, just like SMIC. The chip supplier had settled with $6 billion after being removed from New York in 2019. Yet by selling shares in Shanghai, the company gained a net profit of $30 billion by the end of this year.

Thus, Huawei IPO may lead to a similar outcome and it can accelerate the overall growth of the Chinese market. Eventually, it will also help the company to give a tough spot to its rivals in the global smartphone market.

HarmonyOS operating system is continuously creating new opportunities for the developer community and it is revealed that HarmonyOS related jobs have reached 1 million in the current scenario.

The latest statistics are shared by Huang Bo, Director of Operations at Huawei Developer Alliance during his speech on building the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

He said that the demand for jobs related to the HarmonyOS ecosystem and software will reach 1 million by next year. In a few years, Huang believes that the demand for development talents in HarmonyOS will match the developers in the Apple and Android ecosystem. Thereafter, the company is expecting the number to go beyond 10 million.

HarmonyOS:

Launched in 2019, HarmonyOS is a cross-device operating system, designed and developed by Huawei for all of its devices as well as third-party machines and industry terminals.

Initially, the software was only limited to smart TVs and after a year of launch, Huawei unveiled it for smartphones and other smart consumer platforms.

By August, Huawei confirmed 700 million installations for HarmonyOS. Out of this, 60 million only came from HarmonyOS 4 by September 25. HarmonyOS 4 is the latest version of this operating system that is increasing its popularity in China.

Previous information suggests that more than 30 operating systems are currently based on the open-source version of HarmonyOS. These operating systems are designed for various fields including industry terminals, smartphones, tablets, smartphone devices, and more.

Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei said that the HarmonyOS 4.0 upgrade is great. On the other hand, the progress of its open-source version suggests that the company has a lot of support from the open-source community.

In a recent interview in China, Huawei Founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei talked about Huawei’s product quality and market competitiveness.

He said that Huawei will not sell products that are advanced enough. If the company can’t sell advanced products, it won’t obtain high prices to support its staff.

Ren also explained this statement, that Huawei is facing increasingly severe external difficulties. However, he also said that his company will become more prosperous as time goes by.

Ren Zhengfei said that the Chinese industry needs a better standard system than the US. He mentioned that the American standard system was designed in the 1970s, which is over 50 years ago. These are optimized and changed with each generation.

Ren Zhengfei also shared their view on Euler and HarmonyOS, saying that both of these software codes are donated to open-source foundations. However, the company still insists on investing thousands of people and billions of yuan in this section each year.

Currently, there are over 30 operating systems in China that are based on open-source HarmonyOS. These OS are built for various platforms including smartphones, tablets, smart home devices, and more

Coming to the ERP, he said that MetaERP is gathering attention from the industry and it could easily integrate with cloud technologies.
